The meaning of SIDAI – means I am well in Maasai.
Sidai Serengeti Camp which is set about 35 kms away from Seronera Airstrip as you are heading towards Ikoma, the site is an animal Corridor. Very beautiful for game drive throughout the year…Resident groups of Elephants, Buffalo, Lions, Zebra….during Migration, guests will not even need to go further. It’s about 1 hour drive to the Mara River using Ikoma Gate, so guests can easily stay in this camp and reach the Mara River to view the crossing and come back. Rhinos have been spotted in this place on a deep game drive.

The ambience around SIDAI, as dusk descends quietly with the sun setting on the horizon beyond the Orangi River and its valley, feels like being immersed in a dream. You nestle into comfortable plush seats around a crackling bonfire, looking out at the sprawling Savanna and the rolling hills beyond — right in the core of the Serengeti, within the precincts of SIDAI’s luxury tented accommodation. With no fencing, the jungle begins the moment you step off the porch.
Here, the night arrives on winged feet. The tall grass and acacia trees cast long shadows, and before one realizes it, darkness has set in. The birds of the day fade out, and the denizens of the night take over. The crickets are soon at it with a vengeance, their constant and vociferous stridulation forming the background for all other sounds of the night. Sipping your cup of evening tea in the warmth of the bonfire or the comfort of your room, you may hear unseen feet crunching on the dry grass carpeting the savanna outside. Sudden gusts of wind and the rustling of grass blades bemuse your ears. Is it an impala, wildebeest, or zebra foraging? Or is it something more substantial, a predator perhaps? Your imagination can truly run wild, revelling in endless possibilities!
The surrounding air, heavy with the intoxicating, indescribable aroma of a savanna grassland, is a heady concoction of wild fragrance — the pure, clean smell of a forest older than time itself. The chilly miasma of the night silently wraps around you, carrying the forest scent with it — an elixir of instant rejuvenation.
On a typical moonless night, the darkness is absolute. You may hear rustling at the edge of the tall grass, less than thirty or forty feet away, and when you shine your torch, you may see glowing white eyes bobbing up and down, with the indistinct silhouettes of impalas behind them. Another wildebeest and zebra herd grazes close by in a clearing about fifty or sixty yards away. A gentle breeze blows towards the campfire, carrying with it the jungle’s typical cacophony of crickets, owls, nightjars, and hyenas.
And suddenly, without warning, the cozy hum may be disturbed by the strident alarm call of the impala, wildebeest, or zebra. This is followed by a momentary silence — then a strange noise floats in from the distance, as if coming from the depths of the earth itself. It’s a sound like some subterranean giant yawning after a deep slumber, moving closer or drifting away. If you’re lucky, it moves closer to the camp and grows clearer, with a long, deep note tapering off into a guttural cough — the unmistakable roar of the resident pride of lions.
A quick pattering of hooves, a succession of shrill alarm calls, and the impala herd scatters like leaves in the wind. The roars of the resident lions around SIDAI can be heard repeatedly, at five- to ten-second intervals, coming closer or moving away with every roar.
